ModBlade™ 45
Modular Wind Energy has developed the ModBlade™ Series wind turbine rotor blade, a revolutionary new concept in blade design with outstanding quality and cost-saving benefits inherent in each blade. This three-piece blade has a total length of 45 meters, divided at 15m and 30m along the radius. The root section can be adapted to any current bolt pattern. Modular Wind Energy provides end-to-end logistics, site assembly, bonding, and mechanical erection of blades.
ModBlade™ 45
Modular Wind Energy has developed the ModBlade™ Series wind turbine rotor blade, a revolutionary new concept in blade design with outstanding quality and cost-saving benefits inherent in each blade:
- Up to 20% lighter than traditional blades.
- Lighter weight and jointed design enable greater length.
- Void of serial defects found in traditional blades.
- Built in 2 or 3 divided segments for simple transportation.
- Certified by GL (Germanischer Lloyd).
- First commercial blade to pass the rigorous fatigue test required by the IEC Standard.
- Based on proven aerospace design.
- Modular Wind Energy provides end-to-end logistics, site assembly, bonding, and mechanical erection of blades.
PRODUCT BENEFITS
WARRANTY
We innovate for the turbine OEM that wants a modular blade with the industry’s strongest and most durable joint compound, featuring an industry leading structural warranty.
LOWER ENERGY COST
With less resin and more fiber in the ModSpar™, our superior structural properties are up to 20% lighter, allowing for a longer blade design at the same weight class of smaller blades. ModBlades™ produce up to 10% increased power production.
LOW COST TRANSPORTATION
We transport our blades in 2 or 3 smaller sections, often without the need for costly escort vehicles. The ModBlade™ is ideal for wind farms in remote locations where road conditions prevent delivery of monolithic blades.
ON-SITE ASSEMBLY
We assemble blades up to 60 meters long in the same physical space designed for 37 meter and 45 meter blades. A standard leased warehouse with structural columns can also be utilized. ModJoints™ can be installed, glued, and cured in most climate conditions.
Advantages
Modular Wind Energy’s primary differentiation is its proprietary approach to the structural ModSpar™ contained within wind turbine blades; rather than utilizing conventional infusion or prepreg technology, the ModSpar™ structural “skeleton” employs laminate beams of bonded pultrusion “slats”. The advantages of the ModBlade™ approach are numerous:
- Extremely high quality, with no possibility of dry glass, wrinkles, or improper proportioning of resin/catalyst, which are all typical failure modes for conventional rotor blade construction methods.
- Inherently lower mass due to superior structural properties of the ModSpar™ which features less resin/more fiber within the matrix. On average, our blades weigh approximately 15% less than a vacuum infused rotor of the same length.
- Our spar cap design supports the building of blades in sections; this means we can typically use an existing blade plant, designed for 37 meter and 45 meter blades to build 60 meter blades in the same physical space. A standard leased warehouse with structural columns can also be utilized.
- In addition to building the blade in multiple sections, Modular Wind Energy also has a fully GL approved field bonding process which allows the blade to be transported in sections, dramatically reducing the complexity and cost of outbound logistics. Modular Wind Energy provides end-to-end logistics, site assembly, bonding, and mechanical erection of blades.
Facility Tour
- Modular Wind Energy operates a 150,000 square foot research and development facility in Huntington Beach, California.
- Strategically located near major ports and shipping routes.
- Located in the heart of California’s aerospace community adjacent to Boeing.
- Facility tours are available upon request. Contact sales@modwind.com to learn more.
- The facility provides an ideal location for rotor blade production which is especially fitting as aircraft wing technology served as inspiration for the design of our modular blade.
